Two years ago we did the Autism Speaks walk for research. We didn’t do it last year because we were out of town so much, and in stead of doing it again this year, we’ve come across a need that we’d really like to fill.
For some time we have wanted to get Casey into the Autism Program at the University of Washington. There is long waiting list to get in, and once you do, insurance covers nothing and it would have cost us everything we had to get him the therapy he needs. We prayed really hard for it – and our prayers were answered…but not in the way we had thought. Casey’s teacher at school went on Maternity Leave…and decided not to come back. So they got a new, wonderful teacher who is from…? Where else, the Autism Program at the University of Washington. She is fabulous, and we don’t have to worry about how to pay for the wonderful therapy he’s getting at school.
I’m getting somewhere with this, be patient. This month is Autism Awareness month. I’ve been praying for a way to help other kids with Autism. We are so fortunate to have Casey come as far as he has…and he has a long way to go. Today I got a letter from Casey’s teacher saying that the school has given her an area to put up a playground just for the kids…but the don’t have the money to pay for one. The kids are currently using the ‘big kids’ playground, but only can go on it when the big kids aren’t there. Much of it is too big for some of these kids to use because of the physical disability part that comes along with autism. We would really love to just write them a check for it, but we just don’t have the money.
I know in the past some of you have asked what you can do to help Casey. This is it. It’s helping us give back to the school that has helped Casey get where he is for the last couple of years. It’s helping us give back to the teacher we adore. Lance will be organizing some guys to install it and I’m calling every place in the area to see if we can get discounts on materials. For those who live close by and would like to help with the labor, let us know. For those of you who don’t and still want to help, any contribution would be wonderful. If you know someone who knows someone who can help get us the play set for cheap or anything like that, let us know. Also, let me know if you’d be willing to help with a bake sale or know of another good fund raising thing.
I need help with this. I hate asking for money. Hate it. But this is something that would be so wonderful for these kids.
